It is never too late

Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
John 6:68

It is never too late
Priscilla was recently enrolled to start school in Ndalat in Kenya. She wanted to learn to read and write. She already knew some of her future classmates: six of them were her great-grandchildren! She was probably the oldest pupil in the world at 90 years of age. What was her motivation? "I want to be able to read the Bible."

It was Priscilla's response to God's invitation: "Search the scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of me" (John 5, 39).

The Bible is indeed a unique book containing the message of God's love to mankind. One verse from it summarizes the message: "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life" (John 3, 16).

Perhaps you have never opened a Bible and are not inclined to do so because around you many people will laugh at the idea, although they have never read it. Aren't you challenged by this woman's example? She wanted to go to school to be able to read the Word of God. It is never too late to hear what God has to say to us: "Now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation" (2 Corinthians 6, 2).

For those of us who believe, let us remember what Jesus asked His Father on our behalf: "Sanctify them by your truth; your word is truth" (John 17, 17). Every leaf of this calendar is an encouragement for us to read the Bible. Is our response that of the Lord's disciples: "You have the words of eternal life."?

Today's reading: Psalm 106, vv. 1 - 27

HAZARDING LIVES FOR MISSIONS

Within the space of a few years after the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, the gospel about Him had reached Rome, Alexandria, Antioch and all the great cities in Europe, Africa and Asia. The gospel had made great inroads into the aristocracy and among intellectuals, and had already changed the lives...More
