The angel's message (4)
What a promise for this sad earth, where the peace of paradise was destroyed! Outside the garden of Eden hostility began when Cain killed his brother Abel. There followed countless wars causing millions of deaths, while the present-day crises in the world are adding to them. Peace is almost a foreign word. Think of the disagreement in marriages, families and at places of work! The Bible states: "The way of peace they have not known" (Romans 3, 18). We cannot keep the peace.

Is "peace on earth" then a utopian concept? By no means! The time will come in the future when Christ will rule as king. Then peace will reign among men and even in the animal world. "The wolf shall dwell with the lamb ; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox" (Isaiah 11, 6.7). The Bible remains silent as to how, when and where this will come about, but it leaves us in no doubt that it will be so.

Even today there is the possibility of "peace on earth", for Jesus Christ has "made peace through the blood of his cross" (Colossians 1, 20). I must recognize and confess that I have sinned and need help, that Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sins, and that God judged Him in my place. If I come to Him, He will not "cast me out" (John 6, 37); for He has said, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you" (John 14, 27).

"Peace on earth" can be a reality now, first in one's heart and conscience, and then visibly in our life, our relationships and our communal living.
