A godless world

They should do according to each man's pleasure.Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.Return to me, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts.
Esther 1:8; Judges 21:25; Malachi 3:7

A godless world
"Esther" is the title of a short book of the Bible with few chapters. One feature of it is that the name of God is never mentioned. That is strange for the Word of God. It is the only book showing the people of God chastised by Him in a foreign country without any mention of return. This peculiarity, however, is a challenge for us: isn't it an illustration of the present world, where the Creator and Saviour God is totally excluded? Life continues without anyone caring about what God thinks. Nevertheless He controls everything from above.

In today's world man believes himself to be the master of his destiny. Mankind, it is said, will be finally liberated from God. The claim is made that man is good, capable of evil, but essentially good. Our indisputable social progess is cited as the proof. So in many countries nobody is under compulsion, everyone does as he pleases, choosing from a host of pleasures. As if this pseudo-liberty, often accompanied by pseudo-pleasures, could hide the disastrous state of the present world, for which the responsibility lies entirely with mankind!

The book of Esther should serve as a warning. After a great feast the king in the narrative was faced with a tentative attempt on his life. Today's world will not experience a better fate. One day, the illusion of happiness will give way to judgment. The world is going its own way - to its ruin. But everyone can choose a life with God by deciding to heed His warnings and receive Jesus, the Saviour of the world.

Today's reading: Exodus 34:1-10 · Luke 15:1-10

HOW PERSUADED?

In 2 Timothy 4:10, Demas - a co-labourer with Paul was floored by his love for the world. He became a victim of comfort. Today, many people are also becoming prayerless and shifting their or trust from God to uncertain riches. They are now tending towards the belief that money can fix everything. If you are in such...More

A LESSON FROM GOLIATH

At the first sight of David, Goliath despised him. He was amazed that the children of Israel could find no other man to fight him than a young boy. As if that was not enough, Goliath did not see any conventional weapon of war on David. So he asked, "Am I a dog?" The first lesson we have to learn from this story as...More

Always Be Humble

Who am Ithat you have brought me this far?' 2 Samuel 7:18 (NIV 2011 Edition)
A MEMBER of parliament took his little daughter to visit Westminster Abbey. As she stood looking up at its magnificent columns, her father asked, What do you think, sweetheart?' With childlike candour she replied, I was...More

Forgive And Move On (2)

Anyone who starts ploughing and keeps looking back isn't worth a thing to God's Kingdom!' Luke 9:62 CEV

If you're wise, you'll do four things:

(1) Focus on the road ahead. By looking in the rear-view mirror instead of what's up ahead, you'll end up in a ditch. Focus on the fact you've...More
