It really is serious!

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
Romans 3:23; 1 John 1:7

It really is serious!
The shop sign outside a confectioner's at the street corner read "At the Tiny Sin". It invited passers-by to enter and satisfy their hunger with sweetmeats designated as "tiny sins."

I thought about this expression. And I remembered what sin cost my Saviour: His terrible suffering on the cross, the wrath of God who forsook Him. Jesus' heart-rending cry proclaimed loudly the dreadful gravity of sin in our holy God's sight. God by no means treats sin lightly or indulgently. He assesses it, not according to our criteria, but by His holiness. Had He been able to close His eyes without condemning sin, Jesus would not have been crucified. God never says, as we do: "It's not so serious." It really is, for God had to sacrifice His own beloved Son to solve this terrible problem.

In the gospels Jesus reveals God's love towards sinful man. But on no occasion does He let us suppose that we can be tolerant towards sin. When a woman caught in the act of adultery was brought before Him, He let her go without condemning her, but He added: "Sin no more!" (John 8:11). Throughout His life Jesus knew what the presence of sin in the world would cost Him. He had come to reveal God's immense love and holiness by offering Himself as a sacrifice. And God did not spare His Son, so that He could show grace to repentant sinners.

God cannot endure the sight of sin. But at the cost of the blood of His own Son He cleanses us from it.

Today's reading: Jeremiah 11:1-23 · Luke 22:14-30

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; ...More

What shall the baptized for the dead do if those that are baptized rise not at all? Why also are they baptized for them?
(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are "the dead," and who are those "baptized for the dead"? The next verse gives an important hint: "Why do we also endanger ourselves every...More

KEEP YOURSELF HUMBLE

Several years ago, I was on a visit to a parish of our church in Ilesha (a town in southwest Nigeria) on the same day that a Bible Study was to take place. Because I wanted to be blessed, I sat down in the congregation waiting for the Bible study teacher to commence the lesson for the day. However, an overzealous...More
