A forgiving God

Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of his heritage?
Micah 7:18

A forgiving God
"God always acts unforeseeably and surprisingly," wrote a French journalist. In the Bible we often find occasions when people were surprised at God's power and wisdom. "God is exalted by his power; who teaches like him?" (Job 36:22). Whatever we think or say about God, He is infinitely greater: He can do far more than we ask or even think (cf. Ephesians 3:20).

In today's verse the prophet Micah is astounded at God's forgiveness: "Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity?" The surprising thing about God's forgiveness is that we are pardoned for things that we consider unforgivable! It is God's sovereign right to do so.

God is nevertheless holy and righteous. He cannot tolerate evil. But He can forgive it, because Jesus Christ died to atone for sins. Jesus Christ bore the punishment that sinners deserved in their stead. All can benefit by that, if they turn to God, believing in Christ. Because the holy, righteous Son of God died for their sins, God can forgive the unforgivable through Jesus Christ.

When believers have sinned, their amazement at God's forgiveness is renewed. He is always ready to put things right and free our conscience. Let us not be overcome by a sin that nags our conscience! Let us turn to God as we are, confessing our sin and experiencing the greatness of His forgiveness and the gentleness of His love.

"He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy" (Proverbs 28:13).

Today's reading: Jeremiah 26:1-24 · Romans 2:17-29

It may be that Jehovah will look on mine affliction, and that Jehovah will requite me good for my being cursed this day. And David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hill's side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast...More
