Ungodliness and godliness
When I was studying, three years after May 1968, atheism was prevalent among students. One was either a Marxist or considered thoughtless and behind the times. But things changed. However, after several decades of militant atheism the attraction of spiritual things is still nowhere near disappearing. Russia and China are examples of spiritual starvation. Both these countries sought to eradicate any idea of God, and both had to admit that it survived among those who fought for it.

Atheism may seem less aggressive on an intellectual level at present, but it is no less active in practice. People are not opposed to God, but they live as though God did not exist. The Bible has a word for such behaviour: ungodliness. It is ignoring God in all things, banishing Him from our thinking, not praying and disregarding the question of good and evil - despising God and His Word.

Dear Christian friends, we, too risk being caught up in this ungodliness, if our relationship with God gets distant. Ungodliness is , influencing our whole life. By contrast, godliness is the basis of a truly spiritual life. It consists in maintaining our relationship with the Lord by praying, listening to Him and trusting Him. Godliness also has a collective aspect, when we gather together with other believers to pray, read the Bible, or worship God. Godliness is inseparably linked with faith and our reverence towards God.
