Thoughts on the Gospel of John (31)

For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved.
John 3:16.17.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (31)
Today's verse 16 from the Bible is surely well-known. Maybe you have heard it or read it, even quite often. You may recognise that the words .

These two verses have, however, a different purpose. In verse 15 it is a matter of the fulfilment of God's righteous demands for the salvation of mankind: the Son of man had to die in our stead.

In today's verse we learn that our God, who acts as judge, is, at the same time, a God of love. The same cross that reveals God's holiness shows us His infinite love. He loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son.

In this verse we discover four points regarding God and His love:

God's love is the origin of His dealing in this way.
God's love is not restricted to the one people Israel, but extends to everyone in the entire world.
The cost of God's love was the gift of His only begotten (i.e. unique, incomparable) Son.
God's purpose with mankind is salvation and eternal life in His own glory.
What a wonderful God we have!

(to be continued next Sunday)
