Genuine liberty

If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
John 8: 36.

Genuine liberty
The words "freedom" and "liberty" have become key words with an almost magic quality both for young people and for countless adults seeking to imitate them. For many people being free means ridding oneself of tabus and moral regulations that they consider out-of-date. In the end they think that being free is doing just what they like without considering others. Without our mentioning some consequences, which are often catastrophic, do they realise that they are becoming slaves to their inclinations, their compulsions, their envy - possibly the most formidable forms of captivity?

There is another kind of liberty that we yearn for, one that God wishes to grant us. It is freedom from a compulsion within us, one that delivers us from the tyranny of our desires and passions. Moreover, it gives us new life, a life that is no longer self-centred but orientated towards God. This liberty radiates from the cross of Calvary, where Jesus, in dying for us, broke the chains that were holding us in sinful ways.

It is a liberty free of charge and is offered to all who simply put their trust in Jesus Christ to be delivered and receive God's forgiveness. They then discover that they can have a relationship of love and faith with the Saviour Jesus Christ. At peace with God, they can also establish true, loving relations with those around them.

Today‘s reading: 1 Samuel 14: 11 - 23 · Psalms 98: 1 - 9
