“I am the bread of life”

Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall never hunger; and he who believes in me shall never thirst.
John 6:35.

"I am the bread of life"
Everyone knows how important bread is. Bread means life. The Lord Jesus used this everyday illustration to explain a spiritual truth. He said that He Himself is the bread of life. Therefore whoever receives Him will never again suffer spiritual hunger in his heart and soul, for in contrast to the daily nourishment that sustains life, he has come to know Him who is life itself and who alone gives life. Bread must be eaten. The Lord Jesus is "the bread of life". Whoever has received Him into his life, or, to use the illustration, has eaten of Him will live eternally. Death, God's final judgment of sin, has no hold on him. The living bread must enter his life to give him true life. Then it should be his daily food. For man does not live from bread (as natural food) alone, "but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4; cf. also John 6:51.54).

Bread satisfies, but not for very long, for a hungry feeling returns and needs to be satisfied. However, whoever has eaten of the "bread of life" will never hunger; nor will he desire what this world has to offer; eventually it leaves one dissatisfied.

You probably have enough to eat. But perhaps your soul is hungry and empty. Then I should like to invite you to receive Jesus into your heart to get to know the "bread of life". You can then recommend Him to others, so that many get the food they really need.

Today's reading: Ezra 7:19-28 · Proverbs 8:1-9
