A heroic act

David said with longing, Oh, that someone would give me a drink of the water from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate.
2 Samuel 23:15.

A heroic act
After David had expressed his wish, three of his faithful companions became active: "The three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines, drew water from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate, and took it and brought it to David" (v. 16).

Their names are unknown and should remain so. But the action of these three heroes of David's motivate every Christian to emulate them in the discipleship of the Lord.

First of all, it strikes us that these men kept close enough to David to notice his yearning. Do we live in such close fellowship with the Lord to recognise what He desires of us? We find His will in the Bible. Let us read it to discover His intentions concerning us!

When David's men realised what he wanted, they risked their lives without hesitating in order to fulfil his wish. Does such dedication to our Lord characterise us, too? Are we prepared to follow Him and carry out His wishes, whatever the cost?

David's thirst could be satisfied with rainwater - water from the heavens that had been stored in a cistern. We, equally bring our Lord much joy when we obey His Word and put His thoughts into practice in our lives here on earth.

As Christians we are privileged to follow a greater Lord than David. Are we ever ready to give proof of our love to Him, as David's heroes did for their master?

Today's reading: Genesis 31:22-55 · Psalms 18:20-37

Not I but Christ

Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

Not I but Christ
I have heard it said, "People should be allowed to be themselves." But I can find no scriptural basis to support this statement, for freedom "to be myself" is to...More
