This woman was bent over with her face hopelessly looking...

There was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up. But when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said to her, Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity. And he laid his hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.
Luke 13:11-13.

This woman was bent over with her face hopelessly looking down. She had been like it for eighteen years, seeing nothing but the ground and her feet. She couldn't possibly raise her eyes to look at the sky.

It is no different for many people in this world. The worries, set-backs and deception in their lives have bent them over. They see only the ground around their feet, worldly things close to them and their own person. They cannot raise their eyes towards another horizon, even less to heaven and God. They are unaware that there is a world other than that underfoot, a spiritual world.

That woman would have finished her life in moral misery and burdened with that handicap, if Jesus had not called her, when He saw her. Jesus took the initiative, since she was incapable of raising her head to behold the Lord Jesus, "God manifested in the flesh" (1 Timothy 3:16).

He called her and said, "You are loosed from your infirmity." Then Jesus approached her and laid His hands on her. At that she stood up. Delivered from her bond, she had another horizon in view; she glorified God, proclaiming His love and greatness.

Jesus comes close to each one of us. He does not promise to relieve us of all worries, but asks us to respond to His appeal, believe His word and raise our head to see Him, since He is so near. He wishes to listen to us, help us and save us. He is our Saviour-God.

Today's reading: Job 8:1-22 · Acts 7:51-60
