The wrath of God

He who believes in the Son has everlasting life: and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men.

John 3:36; Romans 1:18.

The wrath of God
In the early years of the twentieth century a church in Croydon, then a town just south of London, had a godly minister who had the salvation of his parishioners at heart. One Sunday evening two frivolous young men entered the church and sat through the evening service. The preacher's sermon was on the subject of "The wrath of God". After the service the two decided to go for a drink in a nearby public house. At the bar one of them asked for "A glass of the wrath of God". The barmaid, wondering if she had heard aright, asked, "What did you say?" The youth repeated, "A glass of the wrath of God." The young lady serving at the bar replied, "You shouldn't say that, you know!" and, as she spoke, the young man fell backwards dead. He had what he had ordered.

This shocking incident serves as a warning that we should not treat God or anything that concerns Him lightly. "Do not be deceived; God is not mocked" (Galatians 6:7). If the Word of God speaks of "everlasting punishment" (Matthew 25:46), shouldn't we take it seriously and not belittle it? Today's verses make it quite clear under what circumstances God applies His wrath. "All ungodliness and unrighteousness of men" can be summed up in one word: sin. This is what has separated the human race from the Creator. Unbelief is the refusal to accept by faith the salvation that God offers, the rejection of the Saviour Jesus Christ. Dear reader, consider the gravity of being outside the sphere of God's grace.

Today's reading: Isaiah 26:1-27:13 · Acts 28:16-31
