Thoughts on the Gospel of John (64)

I do not seek my own glory; there is one who seeks and judges. Most assuredly, I say to you, If anyone keeps my word, he shall never see death. Then the Jews said to him, Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and you say, If anyone keeps my word, he shall never taste death.
John 8:50-52.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (64)
We can only wonder at the perfect Man, Jesus Christ, who is eternal God at the same time. How calmly He reacts to the worst insult cast at Him: ascribing a demon to Him. What He once said: "I am meek and lowly of heart" (Matthew 11:29) now proved true. There was no resentment. What a contrast to the many who are out to defend themselves, and in so doing abuse those who insult them!

Jesus left all to His Father. He was content to serve and was able to save. How astonishing it is in this connection to see Him again inviting people to follow Him: "Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he shall never see death" (even if he had been an infamous enemy). This message of salvation can only come from a heart filled with divine love, and it merits finding acceptance.

However, Jesus' enemies exploit this powerful statement triumphantly as proof that Abraham and the prophets had nothing to do with His doctrine, since they were indisputably dead. If Jesus said such a thing, He must be demon-possessed. Jesus had of course not meant physical death but the second death, eternal separation from God. From this He wished to save mankind, and that is still so today!

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today's reading: Isaiah 49:14-26 · Hebrews 11:8-16

GOD PROMOTES

When God set out to deliver the children of Israel from Egypt, it was to take them out of captivity and bondage and to lift them up. God has come to take you out of your current location in the miry clay to your promised land - a land flowing with milk and honey. This simply tells us that the God of Abraham, Isaac...More

TRAIN UP YOUR CHILD 1

One major undoing of modern civilized society is an abounding generation of untrained children. This trend did not just start, but has been on for some time now. The result is that many untrained children of few years back have become parents themselves. It is the multiplier effect of their lack of proper home...More

A LIBERAL HEART?

Read:
, God asked the widow to feed the prophet before taking care of herself. At the end of the day, what was not enough became more than enough. To what extent do you practice giving as an individual, family, church or nation?

Those who never give will continue to beg, if you desire to...More

Hebrews 11:24-28

Author Zora Neale Hurston wrote a book titled Moses, Man of the Mountain. Published in 1939, it retells the story of Moses and the Exodus. Hurston altered details of the story for her own purposes, weaving in allusions to African American history, folklore, and song. She reflected...More
