The start of a new year

You, LORD; in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain.
Hebrews 1:10.11.

The start of a new year
We have just completed a further stage on our journey towards eternity. The New Year is a good opportunity to stand still for a while before we again take up the routine of daily life. Looking back over the past year may make us pensive; the future raises questions. The past has undergone changes. We do not mean changes that God the Creator intended in nature or the different seasons of the year, but those caused in the world through the intervention of people who live apart from God. Such changes lead us away from God and indicate progressive decline. We can expect even more in the future.

Believers find constancy only by looking upwards to God, "the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning" (James 1:17), and to the Lord Jesus, the Son of God, of whom it says, "through whom also the worlds were made" and of whom today's verse testifies: "You will remain" (Hebrews 1:2.11).

The Lord Jesus is "the same yesterday, today and for ever" (Hebrews 13:8). He has given us His ever valid Word, the Bible. This written Word is our only means of orientation in this New Year. We can and should put its principles into practice in the present circumstances of our age. The Lord Himself will assist us in doing so.

Today's reading: Exodus 1:1-22 · Luke 1:1-12

One of themselves, a prophet of their own, has said, Cretans are always liarsThis testimony is true; for which cause rebuke them severely, that they may be sound in the faith.

Today God is calling you (3)

I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail.' Luke 22:32 NASB

God wants you to do His will, but you'll never reach the place of spiritual maturity in which you're free of Satan. You can overcome him, but you can't eliminate him. Look at Peter. He had only one gear: overdrive. He was always...More
