Today's reading: 1 Corinthians 2

For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Mark 7:21-23

Before me lies the page of a daily newspaper with reports from all over the world. There are accounts of a case of kidnapping, two murders, the misdeeds of a gang of manstealers and the attacks of an ominous religious sect. Nothing but negative news! Disappointed, I put the newspaper to one side.
It is a fact that this kind of news will sell well. But where does all this wickedness come from? Is it a poor upbringing at home, a negative attitude to life or bad examples?
These may play a part but the Bible gives us the real reason; it is man's evil heart, the sin that dwells within us and is responsible for all these horrific things. That is why the Word of God so often mentions our heart, that is, our motives. "Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it spring the issues of life" (Proverbs 4:23). King Solomon gave us this advice. King David once prayed: "Create in me a clean heart, o God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me" (Psalm 51:10).
How can this renewal come about? By means of religious exercises or other human resources? No! Only through repentance towards God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

(Mark 4:11)

The Lord Jesus told His disciples that they would be given an understanding in "the mystery of the kingdom of God." He also spoke of another class of people to whom everything would be spoken in parables; these He described as, "them who are without." How solemn that God should...More

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
