Sent by the Father

We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
1 John 4:14.

Sent by the Father
In the Old Testament we find two especially fitting examples of types of the Lord Jesus Christ. One is Joseph, the son of Jacob, the other is David, the son of Jesse.

Joseph was sent by his father to inquire about the well-being of his brothers. Being obedient and ready to do so, he set out, even though he suspected that his brothers, who hated him, would not receive him amicably.

He was right. As soon as they saw him approaching, they devised wicked plans concerning him. He had hardly arrived, when they stripped him of his tunic and cast him into a pit. They finally sold him to some travelling merchants for 20 pieces of silver.

Jesse also sent his son David to his brothers, who were on military service in the king's army. David set off without hesitating early in the morning, as his father had ordered. His reception by his brothers was equally cool and heartless. When he asked the soldiers about the giant Goliath, his eldest brother Eliab misunderstood him and gave him a gruff answer.

The Son of God, whom the Father sent into the world as the Saviour, knew from the start what awaited Him. Nevertheless He came as a Man to earth for the "wellbeing" of His brethren, who had turned out to be enemies of God. He was even ready to sacrifice His life for them, so that they could be reconciled to God. Jesus Christ's mission applies equally to us all today. Do we receive Him as the Saviour? Or do we, too, treat Him with disdain?

Today's reading: 1 Chronicles 21:1-13 · 1 Timothy 1:1-7
