The Name of God

O LORD, our Lord; how excellent is your name in all the earth!Jesus Christ Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
Psalm 8:9; Acts 4:10.12

The Name of God
It is a mysterious, holy, unfathomable Name. For many it is the name of love and of light that Jesus, the Son of God, came to make known on earth. But certain people, unwittingly or not, associate the Name of God in their speech with outbursts that express impatience or anger, rebellion towards God and even blasphemy. The Bible states: "The LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain" (Exodus 20:7), or even to lie.

Uttering God's Name in religious rites or prayers recited by heart, without true faith is taking His Name in vain. It is even worse to give credit to false testimony or lying by invoking this Name. The Name has no magic power that we can call upon at will.

The Name "Jesus" means "Saviour God". God made Himself known by that Name. It is the Name that everyone, even if previously a blasphemer, must invoke in order to be delivered from his sins and obtain God's grace. By His death, Jesus paid for our offences, and a free pardon is offered to whoever repents. Jesus is the only Name with the power to bring us into a relationship with God.

Dear fellow Christians, bearers of this noble Name, do we make it known around us? If western culture in our time is characterised by eradicating or despising the Name of God, let us pray for more boldness to speak of His love. Let us not be ashamed of the Name of Jesus, but testify of the joy and peace that it brings into our lives: true happiness.

Today's reading: Jeremiah 19:1-15 · Luke 23:47-56
