With this quotation Paul endeavoured to show the Jews from...

There is no fear of God before their eyes.
Romans 3: 18.

With this quotation Paul endeavoured to show the Jews from their own holy scriptures that, like the heathen nations, they are guilty before God (cf. ). All need the forgiveness of sins and deliverance from the power of sin. In the previous verses Paul had revealed the Jews' general condition, then their teaching and their ways. Now it was a matter of the central object of their hearts and lives.

No fear of God! This is the main characteristic of sinful man. He fails to include God in his life and thinking. In him God has no place. Any thought of the Creator is put aside. Yet God is holy: He will enforce His righteous demands on his creature.

Godly fear means taking God and His expectations seriously in every department of our life. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, did so as true Man on earth. Psalm 16: 8 states prophetically: "I have set the LORD always before me," i.e. His life complied fully with God's wishes. He was therefore the only One who did not deserve death. Nevertheless, when He died for us, God did not permit His "holy One to see corruption" (Psalm 16:10).

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom" (Proverbs 1:7), and also the start of the way back to God. Everyone should shudder on realising that God is holy and righteous, and he himself a sinner deserving eternal punishment. God shows all who have done so why His Son Jesus Christ died. He went into death for sinners, so that they can go free and receive eternal life.
