What a surprise!

The grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.
1 Timothy 1:14.

What a surprise!
A burglar crept cautiously through the garden, forced the door of the terrace open and entered the house. With his torch that he had dimmed he made his way through the rooms and searched them. Then he heard a car coming up the drive and stopping in front of the garage. In his haste he grabbed a bundle of banknotes on a chest of drawers and fled.

What a surprise he got when he examined his booty! What he had stolen was not banknotes, but a pile of Christian flyers, the top one of which depicted a banknote on the front page. Inside, the text described how God offered people forgiveness to settle their debt with Him. Instead of money the thief now had an account of God's love and grace.

I wonder what Saul of Tarsus must have thought when Jesus Christ confronted Him on the road to Damascus. The realisation that he had been opposing the Son of God by persecuting Christians must have affected him. What would become of him, violent blasphemer as he was?

Saul was undoubtedly amazed that the Lord Jesus showed him abundant grace. One so guilty received the forgiveness of his sins - an inconceivable gift of grace. But the Lord had more in mind for him: he was to become Paul, a preacher of the gospel of God's grace.

Has divine grace made an impression on you personally?

Today's reading: Ezra 9:5-15 · Proverbs 9:1-18
