August 25, 2015 Today's reading: Isaiah ch. 61 Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard. 1 Samuel 22:23 If one can believe the reports in the press, people are giving up their church membership more than ever before. Many who professed Christianity up to the present day have turned their backs on the church out of sheer disappointment. Their reasons may be manifold, but one thing is true in every case: those who call themselves Christians and the churches to which they belonged until then have not lived unto their expectations. Maybe you are one who has been bitterly disappointed by Christians. We can understand you and must admit that our conduct has not always been truly "Christian". How often has there been selfishness where attention to our neighbour and his welfare were called for! One thing must be said, however. If Christians have frequently failed, Jesus Christ never caused disappointment. If you do not want to have anything to do with Christians or the church, then don't turn your back on Jesus Christ. He gives a friendly invitation: "Come to me all you who labour and are heavy laden" . By this He means those who are disappointed and embittered. To all who come to Him, He promises: "I will give you rest." He has never disappointed anyone who has sought Him sincerely although He will not fail to show us where things are out of order. If we understand that and confess our failings to Him, He will forgive us and grant us peace of mind and heart. His wish is to give us everlasting life and eternal security. |
